Happy week one gentlemen, its great to be back!
There was no laughter in the rain this week with the weather finally breaking in our favor despite the windchill picking up making it feel like a crisp 46 degrees.
As week one kicked off, the boys were buzzing early and had appearances from super subs Schmitty, Eckl Sr. and new to the league sub list, Jay. But with that we have a few league etiquette warnings to hand out already:
League Etiquette Warnings: Jay: Seemingly hunted down the bald eagles, took his win and headed for the hills without so much as staying for a bowl of soup afterward or saying goodbye!
Eckl Sr.: As arguably the most dependable sub we have, HR (Rico Sr.) had a hard time with the phone usage and is considering adding a no phone policy to the league.
Rico Jr: We missed you at dinner but sometimes dad duty calls. The warning is only because you didn't tell us you made it home safe and we were worried sick!
Geo: Maybe was trying to make the puck drop at the bar but seeing Jake left stranded on the 9th green waiting for the rest of the groups to come in was heartbreaking to see!
Lets get to some results.
1. George & Jay G [+2.5] vs. Rico Jr. & Jake [-2.5]
As the group huddled around the opening tee box and a few short statements from the commish, the anticipation was high for Tino to set the tone off the first box. As Neil Sedaka rang loud and true, Jake took a divot with his driver but still managed to hit it 200 and find the fairway. Talk about true power. The Bald Eagles were heavy favorites to take this one as Rico has been travelling the East Coast getting his rounds in, but somehow Jay and Geo stole this one, sealing it by being 2 up with 2 to play (covered by the half point on the line). The bald eagles will need to get back to the nest and regroup as they will have another crack at it in a couple weeks.
2. J Ging & Tommy [+1] vs. Jack & Ryan [-1]
This group was filled with bongs, pens, and joints as the dope show was in full effect. Going into the round, Swoopy and Ryan were on a personal mission to get a W as they went 0 for 2 last year, but would not be an easy test against Tommy and LeHimmer. With Ryan burying a 40 footer for par on hole 3, Ryan and Swoopy struck first but Tommy was quick to answer back with a par on hole 4. This matchup came all the way down to being tied at the 9th hole, where Ryan was able to find a birdie and showed strong play out of the gates. Swoopy now sits atop the leaderboard and what a sight it is to see! Well deserved and good play all around. Tommy and Ging, get ready to run it back next week!
3. Cavs Sr. & Uncle Rico [+2.5] vs. The Eckls [-2.5]
This matchup is going to haunt the Commish and Rico Sr. for a long time.. or maybe just Commish. With a lot of chatter on the range about this line, the Eckls put their money where their mouth is and bumped it from a -2 to -2.5, with a lot of confidence out of the gates. Rico had no problem taking the extra points! As Cavs and Rico were cruising early and reportedly were up by 3.5 with 4 to play, put the Eckls in a win-out scenario very early. Well, Jordan took that personally. Roaring back, Jordan went on a heater and rattled off three straight wins taking this matchup to the 9th green where Cavs went into full panic and ended up gifting the Eckls the W. Rico Sr. continues to advocate for a 4-hole league as the competition can be just too much.
4. Turrisi Sr. & Schmitty [PK] vs. Buster & Johnny Cavs [PK]
Reports from Johnny Cavs was this was an all time vibes group. In the first Pick 'Em match of the year, this one proved to be truly even as again this one came in dead even going into the 9th hole. But, similar to how the Dolphins can't win in cold weather, seems to be the case for Turrisi. With a chance to take the win with a putt on the 9th, pushed it outside of the hole and this one ended in a draw. Proving he is human, the 2025 league king did not start out with a W this year.. but also didn't start with an L and is already hovering around the top of the leaderboard. Vegas will be watching his line closely this year as he is not to be slept on. Buster and Johnny might have been the pairing of the week as Johnny said that was some of the best golf he played.
On to week 2! Go Sabres!
