Week 7 - THE KEYSTONE CLASSIC
HERE WE GO SHER!!!
A special week this week as the fellas celbrated the life, legacy and memory of Sherri in the annual Keystone Classic. Almost poetic that the two year anniverary of her passing fell on a Tuesday this year, and Sher gave us the perfect weather for it.
As the boys gathered around the tee box, to kick it off Cavs led a toast with some ice cold Keystones, as Sherri would have wanted! It turned out to be a special night and the perfect opportunity to reflect on the love we all have for Sher, for each other, and what this league is all about!
Following the toast and Keystone chug, Think I'm In Love by Eddie Money hit the speakers and we were off to the races.
Group 1: Jake & Cavs Sr. [+2] vs. Uncle Rico & George [-2]
No way around it, this was always going to be the Sherri group of the week. Jake was rocking the all-red fit, and Geo with the fresh Father's Day shirt with Buster and Nicole's face's all around it. No matter what the result of the day was here, this group was always going to be tunes, smokes and good times. But.. after Jake hit it 292 off the first tee with a beautiful baby draw, you could tell losing was not an option for him. In what turned out to be a controversial line at the end, this match was more even than the line suggested as it turned out that Cavs and Jake didn't need the handicap and were able to win this one straight up. Chalk it up to an uncharacteristic day for Geo possibly, but with the emotion of the day, there's no faulting him. However, after the match Rico let Vegas have it and let the competitive spirit show, as the man is dying to get some points on the leaderboard! We love the competitive energy and will look forward to the roar or Rico in the weeks to come!
2. Tommy & Johnny Cavs [+1] vs. Ryan & J Ging [-1]
In a polar opposite group from the first group - group two was fueled by the dope show all the way around! With Ryan getting a strong buzz on early and the other boys doped up, pace of play slowed way down and golf wasn't pretty to say the least. Tommy who had been lights out all year and a very uncharacteristic day on the course and could not get the putter working. We were wondering if snapping the fishing line on hole 2 after almost landing a monster got in his head. Ging and Ryan cruised in this one as they had the BLM playlist going in the cart, as Ging was sporting the Democratic Blue polo this week! What a vibe.
3. Bryce & Rico Jr. [-2] vs. Jack & Eckl [+2]
Some developing story lines with the boys in group 3. As on paper Rico and Bryce were the heavy favorites, and Rico getting a true warm up in playing the back 9 with Turris pre-round, you would have thought they would roll Jack and Eck. But, call it Swoopy Magic or the Return of Eck, but Eckl has gone two back to back weeks with lights out play. With the potential on any week to go low, or really high, some are calling him the streakiest golfer in the league. Shutting the door on Bryce and Rico early in the match, Eckl and Jack also dominated this matchup, keeping Swoopy hovering around the top of the leaderboard and Eckl starting to make his climb.
4. Eckl Sr. & Anthony[-1.5] vs. Bunting & Buster [+1.5]
Vegas had a tough time with this line, as Buster shot a 34 the week prior and struck fear in the hearts of everyone, but also Anthony is just so consistently good every week. Landing at a 1.5 difference, you would think it would have been a tough test for Anthony to get this one done. However, with 4 straight bogeys to start the match for Buster, this one was over before it started as Anthony kicked the door down and never let Buster and Bunting back in. We have to mention though, it wasn't all Anthony as Eckl Sr. carded the leagues first EAGLE of the year on the par 5! Well done all around, and Eckl Sr.'s application for full league entry may have been moved to the top of the pile after that eagle!
Dinner Portion of the Evening
Golf aside, this is where we really kicked things off. With shots flowing and a few more toasts to Sher, the boys had Dancing Queen blasting on the speaker as we all settled in to a meal and celebrations. We may have drank Timber Ridge dry of their Jim Beam inventory by the time the night was done. We were also pleased to host Fo for the dinner portion and steal all his ciagarettes for the table! At least we found him an ash tray! Fo went ahead and ordered the special this week which was compared to prison food, that's how appetizing it was. Good god.
A special week, for a great group of men, and Sherri would be proud to see how far we've all come in the past two years. We'll keep the party going for you Sher! Bang!
