Week 9

Jul 8
4 min read

Happy 250th to America and happy birthday to Luka! Week 9 was full of patriotism and birthdays as the boys came off of the 4th of July holiday and were back in action.

Slightly hungover but carrying the 4h of July spirit into week 9, the bald eagles met for their final pairing of the season in style. Freshly shaved heads and crisp bald eagle tees for this group as they were all business this week.

The league welcomed Justin Bunting this week as our latest super-sub, filling in for Bryce and paired with his dad to take on Anthony and Geo. More on this match later but Rico Jr. set expectations very high for JB Jr. saying he was good for a 38 on the card..

The big story this week was Luka's birthday and the ice cream soup. Commish was looking out for one of our own in buying her an ice cream cake but the boys in the back must have been keeping it under the heat lamps.. Luka brought it out excited to have a slice but ended up dishing it out with a ladle.. not bad! Commish also didn't buy a single candle for poor Luka.. just a melted ice cream cake.

Group Results:

1.  Bald Eagles [-1]  vs. Jack & Ryan [+1]

Let me start by saying how much I hate the bald eagles. Every time I come up against them they play to the peak of their abilities and its the least fun a person can have on the golf course! The connection they have is undeniable. To start, Jake hit the chip in of his life on the first hole as all signs pointed towards eagle domination early. With a bounce, flag stick and drop into the cup the eagles took the first hole. It was all gas no brakes from there, as Rico and Jake were even hitting approach shots into each other on the green to knock each other closer. Meanwhile Ryan and Swoop got bad break after bad break. On the par 5, Rico hit a 220yd 7 wood to 10ft and to ice the match. This one wasn't even close as the eagels won 6 of the 9 holes and the eagle cry was heard around the golf course. They suck!

Mark it down that Jake also beat Ryan straight up, that's how in his head the eagles were.

2.  Ian & J Ging [+4]  vs. Buster & Uncle Rico [-4]

Filling in for the disappeared Johnny, Ian was riding along with Ging this week against Buster and Rico who have been hot as of late. With Ian's and Ging's clubs holding a combined value of $75, it was always going to be tough to compete! It turned out that vegas couldn't set the line high enough for this one as Buster and Uncle Rico rolled 'em, with reports that Uncle Rico was looking at a low 40s round if he could have found the putter. Maybe he was well rested from not having to take the boat out this fourth of july and got to watch movies because of the rain, but something to keep an eye on for next week as Uncle Rico seems to be picking up steam!

3.  JB Sr. & JB Jr. [+1.5]  vs. George & Anthony [-1.5]

A similar story for group 3 and not too much to report different for this group as this was the third straight group Anthony and Geo took it to the Bunting duo in what Anthony called a mistake by vegas. If anyone is to blame here, blame it on Rico Jr. who threw in that JB Jr. would shoot between a 38-42, and would be competitive with Anthony. Turns out the father son duo couldn't pull it together in the end. Perhaps Geo and Bunting are spooked by their previously low rounds, as their scores are backsliding and settling in right back to where they are used to in the high 40s!

4.  Cavs Sr. & Tommy [+1.5]  vs. Turrisi Sr. & Eckl [-1.5]

Well.. look who found their way to first place on the leaderboard. Commish who conveniently sets the lines each week sits atop the board (followed right behind by Tommy) as our outright leader. Against an Eckl who has been hot as of late and a jet-lagged, possibly vertigo ridden Turrisi Sr., this match line maybe should have been reversed. But reports told that this match was the only close one of week 9, as putting struggles continued to plague this group as they did for all the others. With a chance to go down by a half point going into the 9th, Eckl missed a 2-3 footer and handed Cavs and Tommy the W. Turrisi was very excited to be done and get back to bed, as he disappeared immediately after the round without so much as a goodbye! Who knew that jet lag lasts for weeks!
